Mr Adley wrote
to the Secretary of State on
February about the unfortunate episode of his invitation, later in effect withdrawn, from British Airways
to visit Hong Kong on an inaugural flight from Manchester.
Mr Adley said that British Airways had told him that they
had been advised by "official sources" in Hong Kong that he
was likely to receive a hostile reception in Hong Kong, and
should be discouraged from making the trip.
He later
suggested to Mr Culshaw over the telephone that i t mus t
have been Hong Kong officials who had told the Press about
his proposed visit (a hostile article about the visit had
appeared in the "South China Morning Post" on 2 February).

The Governor was consulted by telegram, and the
Secretary of State replied to Mr Adley on 26 February
telling him that both British Airways and the Governor had
assured US that no suggestion that Mr Adley should not go to Hong Kong had been made by any
any Hong Kong Government
sources.
