SUBJECT:

Please refer to Mr Waddington's letter of 29 August

to Lady Young.

I am happy to confirm that the Secretary of State

is content that you should now visit Hong Kong as

proposed. The Hong Kong Government welcome the visit

and will be arranging a programme. They have already

booked hotel accommodation for the nights 21-26

September inclusive. You will no doubt let them

know as

soon as possible whether a further Home Office

official will be accompanying Mrs and Mrs Waddington

and yourself.

The Secretary of State was very grateful for Mr

Waddington's ready agreement to omit India from his

itinerary and to give Mr Renton a clear field with

the Indian Government. Unfortunately, this sacrifice

appears to have been in vain as the latter have now

informed us that the dates proposed for his visit

are "inconvenient" and we are having to agree alternative

dates with them.
