Spokesman made the following announcement: "The Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, Sir Geoffrey Howe, had a first round
of talks this morning with the Nigerian Foreign Minister, Professor Akinyemi, who is paying an official visit to Britain
from 7-9 January. They discussed bilateral relations,
including economic matters. Sir Geoffrey welcomed and recognised the importance of Nigeria's recently announced measures to sustain the health and strength of the economy.
He stressed Britain's continuing determination to do all possible to help Nigeria in solving problems of debt, for example, in the Paris Club. Their meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, was friendly and business-like, reflecting the traditionally close ties between Britain and Nigeria.

The
JAPANESE FOREIGN MINISTER'S VISIT
Spokesman announced that Mr Shintaro Abe, the Foreign Minister of Japan would be paying an official visit to the UK on 21 - 22 January. Spokesman added that the visit formed part of a pattern of regular Anglo-Japanese political exchanges. The last such formal meeting between the Secretary of State and r Abe was in 1984 when Sir Geoffrey Howe visited Tokyo. They also met on the occasion of the Economic Summitsin London in 1984 and Bonn in 1985. Apart from his talks with Sir Geoffrey, Mr Abe will also be calling on Frime Minister Frs Margaret Thatcher. He would
probably also see other ministers but programme details had
not yet been finalised. Spokesman reminded journalists that
the Prince and Princess of Wales would be visiting Japan in May.
In reply to a question Spokesman said that some of the subjects
likely to be touched on in the talks between Mr Abe and Sir
Geoffrey included East/West relations, Japan's relations with the European Community and South Africa.
