MR RENTON'S VISIT TO HONG KONG
cc: Sir W Harding
Mr Roberts, News Dept
1. I spoke to the Governor on the telephone this morning
about Mr Renton's press conference, and put to him the
arguments in your minute of 7 January. He understood and
accepted the force of them. However he said that the
problem with a morning press conference i s that it would give insufficient time; half an hour would not be enough.
The Minister would be liable to severe criticism for giving
the press an inadequate chance to talk to him.
2. I asked whether things would be improved if the press
conference were to be brought forward
forward to 6.45 or 6.30. He
wa s a bit doubtful. He has however
however promised to discuss
this with his advisers tomorrow morning and to send us a further telegram.
3.
The Governor asked whether Mr Renton might be able to
delay his departure to Bangkok to a later flight. You
kindly agreed to see whether there were any later flights.
