Annex C

Counterfeit Currency

The Chinese side expressed concern at the problems caused by circulation of counterfeit currency in China. Recently counterfeit US and IIK dollars as well as French francs had been discovered. The need for close cooperation between Hong Kong and China in dealing with counterfeit currency was reaffirmed. It was explained that due to currency exchange restrictions in China it is easy to detect counterfeits as long as characteristics of previously discovered counterfeit notes can be circulated. Hong Kong was requested to pass on details of new discoveries of counterfeits urgently in order that control measures could be adopted. This was agreed.

2.

The matter was followed up in detail during further discussions with officers of Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) and specimens of counterfeit notes held by CCB were handed over to the Chinese delegation. Specific cases were discussed and a request made to the Chinese side for assistance in locating a wanted counterfeiter now believed to be in China.

3.

Previously agreed arrangements for early passage of information on counterfeiting cases were reaffirmed.
