POSSIBLE VISIT TO UK BY MEI ZHAORONG

1.

Thank you for your teleletter of 11 November about

a likely visit to London by Mei Zhaorong in February or March 1987. We are indeed looking forward to seeing Mei

and a number of people hope to have good talks with him.

2. We had understood that Mei would be visiting a number of West European capitals, particularly to discuss bilateral relations. Certainly, we expect to have a

number of topics to raise under this heading, not least

in preparation for the formal visit which we expect

Foreign Minister Wu Xueqian to make at the invitation of Sir G Howe, possibly in June or July.

the

3. We are equally keen to use the opportunity of Mei's visit to hold planning talks. On/defence and

disarmament side of the Office we also think that it

would be a good idea to engage Mei in a discussion of

Pol/Mil and disarmament matters. We would expect

Brian Fall to lead on the UK side in these talks.
