Thank you for the revised version of the Prime

Minister's speech at her dinner for Mr Hu on 9 June.

this is now being translated and printed.

As noted in my letter of 21 May, the dinner provide

an excellent opportunity to try to rid him of some

possible misconceptions about the UK; and to impress on

him what we can offer China as we both prepare to make

countries with historical riches (and impedimenta) ready

to be world leaders in the 21st century. I attach some

notes that the Prime Minister might find useful for the

conversation over dinner.

The principal issues in China are: political

organisation and succession; agriculture (including gra

production) and what to do with surplus labour; problem:

of economic growth; the political role of China's armed

forces; educating and motivating the youth of China on
