JOINT DECLARATION: FOURTH EDITION
THE FUTURE OF HONG KONG:
CHECK LIST:
1.
I am sorry for the delay in replying to your letter of 8 January enclosing a copy of the Fourth Edition of the Check List. I have to admit, however, that we can find no trace of your letter of 20 June 1985 which must have enclosed the Third Edition.
2.
We have very few comments on the current list although we note that several of the points listed in the Annex to my letter of 4 February to John Chan are not reflected in the list. Specifically I am thinking of the desirability of moving the items on establishing a Hong Kong Register of Shipping and a system for certification of competence of Frw?.. from the "medium" term to the "early" listing, because of the need to deal with them before the introduction of the Merchant Shipping Bill (Section VIII,
(Section VIII, Shipping, Annex (i)). Also we think that asterisks should be
be put against items (a) and (e) in the Shipping Section and in Section I. We suggested inserting "prepare plans for 1987 Review of Representative Government"
under "early".
be
added
Presumably item (a) in Section XII can be deleted.
3.
I note that several of the points in your Check List are likely to appear in the List which we will prepare of purely UK points of interest, e.g. Consulate-General, Garrison, Commonwealth War Graves etc. As soon as we have finalised our list we will send you a copy.
