Movement between China and Hong Kong

I attach a report for the quarter ending 30 June 1986.

Briefly, during the quarter:

Tables 1 and 2

The number of PRC officials employed by PRC enterprises in Hong Kong decreased slightly from 3,350 at the end of March 1986 to 3,130. The total number of PRC officials in Hong Kong

(including those in employment, under training or on temporary stay) increased from 3,389 last quarter to 3,611 this quarter. The total overall figure is still on the increase, from 4,297 to 4,606 (7.19%).

Table 4

Of the major Chinese organisations, Guangdong Enterprises shows the largest increase of 63 extra staff (13.75%) and China Resources an increase of 43 (5.36%). NCNA has increased its staff by 19 (5.82%).

Tables 5 and 6

The number of visiting official delegations and delegates rose during this quarter: 1,250 delegations/5,086 people compared with 1,240 delegations/4,767 people in the first quarter. This is the first increase this year. Table 6 shows a half-yearly figure of 9,853. On a projected basis this would yield a total figure for all of 1986 amounting to 19,706, representing a 48.39% decline over 1985. This indicates that the total number of PRC officials visiting Hong Kong in the first 6 months of 1986 has shown a marked fall.
