A number of major infrastructural projects are
under construction or being
or being planned for implementation.
Some of these projects, while facilitated by the Hong Kong
Government, are financed by
by the private sector. They
include notably the Eastern Harbour Crossing costing $3.4
billion, which will provide a road and rail link between
the eastern part of Hong Kong Island and East Kowloon by
1990. Other examples are the construction of a sixth
terminal at the Kwai Chung Container Port (already the
third largest in the world), and active planning for a
second air freight complex at the Kai Tak International
Airport. Further, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation
is constructing the first phase of the Light Rail Transit
System for the Tuen Mun and Yuen Long New Towns at a cost
На of $1.2 billion, and is formulating proposals for a major
expansion of its freight terminal at Hung Hom Station.
