in the Legislative Council on 25 June 1986

Question: Will Government inform this Council:-

(a) what is the present position in regard

to the supply and demand of primary and secondary school places in various districts in Hong Kong?

(b) why is there a phenomenon of surplus

primary school places but shortage of secondary school places in the same district (such as Kwun Tong) and what are the solutions to this problem?

(c) whether consideration will be given to

converting surplus primary school premises for use as secondary schools in order to reduce the shortage of secondary school places?

Sir,

With regard to the first part of Mr Poon's

question, I have attached two tables to the text of my

reply which I think provide the information required.

Table 1 indicates that there is surplus provision of

primary places in all Districts. It should be noted,

however, that the surplus territorywide refers to the

number of places which could be made available if the

maximum number of classes were operated. In practice,

however, the number of surplus places in operating classes

is substantially less at around 43,000. The situation at

the secondary level, as shown in Table 2, is rather
