Furthermore, the Housing Department is currently
considering suggestions by the Pest Control Advisory Section
on the design of flower beds and landscaped areas to further
inhibit their use by rats.

Cooked food centres are regularly inspected to
ensure that operators keep their premises in an hygienic
condition. The common areas of these centres are also
cleansed thoroughly each day by the Housing Department.

The fact is that rats accumulate where there is a
ready supply of food waste. Therefore, estate staff are
doing their best to educate tenants through regular notices,
newsletters and meetings to ensure that food waste and
refuse are properly disposed of.

It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to
eliminate all rats in public housing estates, like in any
densely populated areas. However, with the co-operation of
tenants, the assistance of the Pest Control Advisory Section
and the continuing efforts of Housing Department staff, I am
confident that the problem of rats in public housing estates
will gradually reduce.
