(Chapter 265)

PEAK TRAMWAY (AMENDMENT) BILL 1985

On 3 December 1985, having considered memorandum XCCI(85)62, Members expressed dissatisfaction with the written commitment offered by the Peak Tramways

The Peak Tramway (Amendment) Bill

2

The Peak Tramway (Amendment) Bill was introduced into the Legislative Council and it went through the First Reading on 4 December 1985. Consequent upon the decision of the Governor in Council on 3 December 1985, the Bill was held in abeyance pending further clarification with the Peak Tramways Company regarding its intention to modernise the Peak Tramway.

Modernisation of the Peak Tramway

3

After discussion with the Secretary for Transport, the Company has confirmed its intention to implement a programme to modernise the Peak Tramway. In general terms the modernisation programme involves replacement of the haulage plant by a new one which would be programmed to operate automatically, installation of new control and signalling system and replacement of the existing tram cars by bigger ones especially built for funicular

for funicular railways. The precise details of the programme depend upon studies, which the Company has already started, of various types of equipment, much of which has to be obtained from overseas. The study will take about six months to complete. Given the time required for design, tendering and construction, the earliest date by which the new system would be in operation is mid-1987.
