Social Welfare Department's survey indicates that about 42% of all cases involve public housing tenants. In the majority of these cases the husband is the tenant and there is some doubt whether a court has the power to direct the Housing Authority to divest the husband of his tenancy and transfer it to his wife if there has been a finding of domestic violence in which the husband was the aggressor. This doubt has not deterred the courts from issuing orders in such circumstances and in most cases husbands have acted in accordance with them. The threat of imprisonment for ignoring such an order is normally sufficient to ensure compliance with it.
