VISIT TO HONG KONG AND INDIA, 9-12 DECEMBER

1.

I have just returned from a quick visit to Hong Kong for the Governor's funeral and then three days in India talking primarily about Sikh extremists in Britain and a Draft Extradition Treaty.

Hong Kong

2.

The Governor's funeral was impressive and very well

organised, given the short time available. It was a most moving occasion and I was glad to be able to get there for it. I saw Lady Youde and her two daughters. Lady Youde is bearing up marvellously well and was obviously touched that the Governor's death in harness, working for Hong Kong, had brought forward such a wealth of friendly sentiment for him. The streets were lined with people for the procession to the Cathedral and the condolence books which were in all the District Board offices had been signed by more than 30,000 in the first day.
