Wu

Peking telegram no 2205 reports that Sir R Evans with meet

Xueqian on 27 November.

Should he explore with Wu the

possibility of a further meeting between the Secretary of State

and Wu in the summer of 1987, in addition to Wu's visit to the UK

next year?

Recommendation

2.

I recommend that we instruct the Ambassador to indicate to

Wu that:

(a) the Secretary of State looks forward to seeing Wu here

next year, preferably during the first half; and

(b) the Secretary of State is thinking in terms

of a further

possible meeting with Wu during the summer of 1987.

3.

I submit a draft telegram on these lines. At FED's request,

the telegram also instructs HMA/Peking to make
