HONG KONG: EXCHANGES WITH THE CHINESE
Dr Wilson Mr Hum, HKD

1. Mr Renton has read Mr Hum's submission of 5 November carefully. The recommendations seem to him sensible. He has just two comments:
a) During his own visit to Peking, Mr Renton formed the impression that Sir R Evans and Zhou Nan got on well. He thinks it important that we do not do anything to undermine that relationship;
b) On his own travel plans, Mr Renton thinks he should aim to visit Hong Kong again in March/April 1987, 14/15 months after his last visit. He is thinking of combining this with a first Ministerial visit to Japan, but would be glad to go to Peking, principally for talks with Zhou Nan, as well or instead, if that looks desirable nearer the time.
