(report) The Mirror Monthly: Local people's views on the structure of the territory's political system should be sought to assist in the drafting of the Basic Law. The article said China was not opposed to direct elections in HK, but it was against plans by Britain that would in effect turn HK into an independent territory.

Umelco member Maria Tam: The 1987 review should come up with clear solutions to various questions concerning HK's future political structure so

as to make it easier for the Basic Law draftsmen to consider the question of convergence of the territory's political system before and after 1997. Elected seats in Legco should be increased while the number of appointed

members should be cut.
