You might find it of interest to look at the enclosed article, taken from the Far Eastern Economic Review of 4 May 1961. In it the author, Mr Nigal Ruscoe (not otherwise identified), described feelings and beliefs in Hong Kong about representative government and the long term future of China.

While the article is obviously dated, it provides background in how representative government was viewed both officially and unofficially twenty-five years ago. It also identifies the development of political awareness among the Chinese population of Hong Kong, a factor generally missing earlier. The Chinese students whose aspirations are mentioned in the article are now the 40-50 year old managerial group in Hong Kong from whom some at least of the pressure for more say in their own affairs is coming.
