AGGREGATE, ASPHALT AND CONCRETE FROM ANDERSON ASIA ONE of the few natural resources available in Hong Kong is an abundance of hard, subsurface granite. At the forefront of the excavation of this resource is Anderson Asia.
The company is a market leader in the production and marketing of aggregate, asphalt and ready mixed concrete for the construction industry in Hong Kong. Its success is based on a simple, three-part recipe. "We sell quality materials, provide efficient service and use the very latest technology," says T.W. Chow, Anderson Asia's managing director.
For the production of aggregate, the company maintains a very high standard of quality control that ensures that its product not only meets the relevant British standards, but the various requirements of consultants, contractors and government departments as well.
The building industry today demands predictable and consistent quality and delivery and for Anderson Asia that means the use of the most modern equipment in its quarry at Lam Tei. It has a highly effective computerized technical and management information system, and supports all operations with strong back up services.
Though quarrying is the company's principal activity, subsidiaries are involved in the supply of asphalt and sub-base for paving and road surfacing, as well as ready mixed concrete for construction projects.
In 1985, Anderson Asphalt produced the asphalt and completed the surfacing of almost half of the new 24.2 km. highway linking Shatin and Fanling. The company achieved a performance record by paving and laying 4,130 metric tons of sub-base and asphalt in a single day.
Reflecting its emphasis on technology as an aid to its business, Anderson Asphalt operates a new, 200 tonnes an hour, fully computerized asphalt batching plant in Shatin. The plant controls the quality and type of asphalt produced and the rate at which it is produced. "You can store up to 99 different recipes for types of asphalt in the computer. You just press a button to get the asphalt you want," explains Mr Chow.
He is equally enthusiastic about the capabilities of his other subsidiary, Ready Mixed Concrete (H.K.), which poured a record 3,462 cu.m. of concrete in one day for the Mass Transit Railway Corporation's Tin Hau Station. In all, the company has supplied more than one million cu.m. of concrete for different MTR projects.
RMC, which uses 80% of Anderson Asia's output of aggregate, has established a strong reputation for quality of product and service. Much of the company's success is attributed to its modern laboratories where trained technicians test and analyse materials and concrete to ensure that international standards are met.
