HCT
THE CHINA EXPERT
"WE have the contacts, the Hutchison Group has the technical and financial capabilities and China has the need," says Simon To, managing director of Hutchison China Trade. "We identify the opportunities and then develop them, acting as the matchmaker and the deal maker."
The company's business interests cover a range of high potential opportunities conducted under the five specialist operating divisions of energy, transportation, telecommunications, construction and food processing. HCT's goal is to build a profitable, long-term, total business relationship with China for the benefit of the Group as a whole and to structure trade and investment opportunities between China and the industrialised world.
The company's activity spread is broad. HCT undertakes projects ranging from offshore support for the oil industry and marketing for aviation manufacturers, to the development of hotel management investment opportunities in China and the marketing of construction materials, equipment and technology.
Representative offices are located in the key trade centres of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and, over its many years of China trading, the company has woven an impressive network of contacts and a favourable reputation with state corporations and government officials.
At the Hong Kong end of the operation, the office is staffed by specialists who are able to supply expertise and backup to HCT personnel working in the field.
"We believe that this is a very good way of organising our operations. It allows for the highly effective combination of identifying projects in China and comprehensive support from industry specialists in Hong Kong." says Mr To.
HCT's personnel in China look for developments which may affect the Group's interests in Hong Kong, China and elsewhere. They also offer valuable support to other Hutchison subsidiaries and associates with interests in China. Successes to date include the supply of power generation equipment, complete plants for rubber tyre manu- facturing, aircraft and helicopters, coal mining and construction equipment and the setting up of the first joint venture supermarket in Shekou.
The Hutchison Group as a whole is a net importer from China, with annual purchases approaching the HK$1,000 million mark. The Group imports annually HK$300 million of Chinese foodstuffs for Park'N Shop supermarkets. Last year, Hongkong Electric bought 10% of China's total coal exports for use in its power generation plants in Hong Kong.
"Our policy of growth and development, both for ourselves and for China, will continue to be our primary goal," says Mr To. "The Chinese are selective about whom they work with, the market is fiercely competitive and China can afford to choose the best. The people we work with are committed to long-term partnerships with China."
