VISIT BY SIR Y K PAO

1.

"relevant

Please refer to Mr Ashton's minute of 27 May attached. Thus far we have a call for briefing from the Private Office (for the Secretary of State's box on 5 June) and a minute from PS/Mr

Mr Renton indicating that only briefing on developments" (ie since Pao's last visit in March) is required. We discussed briefing requirements this morning, and agreed that something pretty concise should meet Ministers'

Ministers' requirements this time.

2.

I have looked at what we provided Private Office in March, and conclude that short updated briefing for the Private Office, copied to PS/Mr Renton, would be useful on the following:

(a)

Representative Government;

(b) Li Ka-shing's possible citizenship application;

흐흐흐 프

Scholarship Fund;

Basic Law;

Air Services;

3.

UK-China trade (Ningbo steel project).

Mr Ashton is I think providing something short on (c) and If I provide on

(a), could you update on the rest as necessary? I suggest we aim to pass all drafts to Mr Layden

(with FED's additions if available) by c.o.p. on 4 June.
