VISIT BY SIR Y K PAO

1.

As you are probably aware, Sir Y K Pao is planning to be in London for much of the working week from 9-13 June. (By no coincidence, General Secretary Hu Yaobang will be visiting Britain from 8-12 June). You and copy addressees may be interested to have details of his appointments with ministers, which we have been trying to piece together, as follows:

9 June

Breakfast with Sir Geoffrey Howe

15.30 Call on Mr Walker.

16.00 Possible signature at No 10 of memorandum

on scholarship scheme: under discussion. Call on Prime Minister

10 June

11 June

16.30

12 June

15.30

Call on Mr Hurd

Call on Mn Renton

Sir Y K's office is also trying to arrange meetings with Lord Whitelaw, Mr Tebbit and Mr Wakeham.

2.

There will no doubt be formal requests for briefing from Private Offices in due course. Perhaps I could suggest that, this time, given that Hong Kong issues will probably again predominate in volume and complexity, HKD coordinate briefing. For our part, we would envisage providing material on Sir Y K's scholarship scheme for China and (with the help of DTI) his commercial interest in China, at least to the Secretary of State, Mr Renton and No 10.
