NEW GOVERNOR FOR HONG KONG

The House will be aware that the Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Edward Youde, died suddenly last week at the residence of Her Majesty's Ambassador at Peking, during an official visit to China. His funeral has taken place in Hong Kong today. The Acting Governor, Sir David Akers-Jones, represented Her Majesty The Queen and my Honourable Friend the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs represented Her Majesty's Government.

I am sure the whole House would wish to join me in expressing our appreciation for the work of this outstanding public servant, and in extending our sympathy to Lady Youde in her sudden and heavy loss.

The question of a successor to Sir Edward is now being considered by the Government, and a recommendation will be made to Her Majesty The

Queen in due course.
