As regards the record of resettlement of Vietnamese refugees from the region, I have obtained the enclosed table from the UNHCR to show the resettlement of Indo-Chinese boat refugees from countries of first asylum in the South East Asian region between 1975 and 1 October this year. In addition to the 15,600 boat refugees taken by the United Kingdom, about 1,000 land refugees were also resettled in the United Kingdom and about 2,000 Vietnamese have been accepted under the Orderly Departure Programme. The total number so far taken by the United Kingdom is about 19,000.

We are very grateful for your interest in the well-being of Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong and I hope that this information is of help to you. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I hope that you and your wife have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
