In an editorial, Ming Pao supported Mr Hartling's call on Britain
to accept more VRs from HK so as to set an example for other
resettlement countries. The paper maintained that the closed camp policy was the only option for HK if we had to keep the refugee proble under control. "Probably, millions of VR would flock to HK if we
accept all VRs without any restrictions and allow them to stay here for good. Should this happen, HK would be ruined. If VRs were allowed to stay in HK, it would be unreasonable to turn away illegal immigrants
from China."
The SCM Post's editorial called on the UN to grasp the nettle and
decide how much longer it should continue to adopt policies which encouraged dissatisfied people to flee. It asked how many of today's "refugees" were persecuted politically and genuinely in fear of their lives, or were simply anxious to enjoy a better life elsewhere.
