we understand that Following discussions at official level/ the Foreign Secretary

will be writing to the Home Secretary shortly commenting on SCORRI's

recommendations concerning the Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office are particularly concerned about

10. The Foreign Secretary is likely to suggest that the United Kingdom

should enter into an on-going commitment to take about 500 refugees

a year from Hong Kong. [This could be discharged in the first year

lever in seeking to obtain similar commitments from the international

community.

A statistical analysis is attached.

It will be seen that the largest number of those accepted for family

reunions come from Vietnam: 118 were granted during the last six

months of 1984 with 48 from China and 7 from Hong Kong.
