WHETHER FURTHER UK INTAKE WOULD ENCOURAGE OTHER COUNTRIES

TO TAKE MORE

We have had extensive contacts with United Nations High

Commissioner for Refugees and other resettlement

countries, as indicated in the FCO's oral and written

evidence to SCORRI.

If we were to take further quota now, it would clearly be

viewed favourably by those countries we are asking to

us. But

take more in the light of what they have told

there can obviously be no guarantee that they would

respond by taking more

themselves.

[IF PRESSED

Cannot speculate as to the number of refugees we would

need to take in order to

encourage other countries to

accept more].
