III.
A PRECIS OF SAMPLE CASES WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM CARE IN A
SHORT-STAY CENTRE
from Margaret Woods
This small sample of problems illustrate that the stresses endured by
the Vietnamese refugees are manifesting themselves in diverse ways.
They range from homesickness, problems with in-laws, mental conflict,
anxiety, depression and withdrawal to florrid psychoses.
It is not really possible to categorise the problems entirely into
physical, social or psychologul ones as often there are no
definite boundaries between the aspects of human life, but Ockenden
is receiving increasing numbers of referrals from social workers and
even psychiatric units about people for whom it is felt a specialised
kind of psychiatric assessment and support is required. The suggestion that such persons would be helped most in a Vietnamese orientated
environment because of linguistic and cultural barriers is a constant
feature of the referrals; time and time again the existing services are
admitting inadequacy at dealing with the problems of the very distressed
refugees.
