SCORRI DIPLOMATIC INITIATIVE: RESPONSES BY

RESETTLEMENT COUNTRIES

(373) 1.

Mr Renton was grateful for your minute of 8 November in which you outlined the progress we have made in pressing other resettlement countries to take additional numbers of refugees from Hong Kong. The Minister proposes to raise this subject with the American Ambassador, if an opportunity presents itself, when they lunch together on 27 November. He would also gladly encourage other selected Ambassadors and/or High Commissioners (eg Canada, Japan, France) to recommend that their governments support our initiative. He would be grateful for your views in due course.

He would also be grateful for a brief note on the timing of our acceptance of the 500 family reunion cases. When do we expect them to begin arriving?
