1. The Secretary of State thanked M. Dumas for the French
government's message about the Anglo/Irish agreement it had been
much appreciated.
East/West Relations and Arms Control
2. M. Dumas and the Secretary of State agreed that UK and French.
positions on nuclear weapons were in line. The Secretary of State
asked whether the French had formed a view about the US/Soviet
proposal for nuclear fusion research. M. Dumas confirmed that Mr
Gorbachev had raised this subject during his visit to Paris. The French had indicated they were in principle in favour of the idea. They believed that Mr Shultz had discussed the proposal on his recent visit to Moscow but were unsure as to the US position.
UK and France should keep in close touch on this issue. Our
response would have to take into account our other obligations,
notably our involvement in JET. The Secretary of State said he
would look favourably at the proposal but our involvement in JET
limited the resources we had available we would have to consider
carefully the practicalities.
