1. Following our meeting on 16 December I spoke to Frau Günther, Referat 301, Auswärtiges Amt, who is responsible for

2.

Vietnamese refugees.

Frau Günther said that the Germans were not aware of the figure of 88 cases of refugees with close family ties (mentioned in Miss Walker's letter of 14 November to Leeks). The UNHCR had originally given the Germans a list of 788 with ties in the FRG. After discussions with the Länder, the Germans had agreed to consider 32 with close family ties and the German Consul-General in Hong Kong had been informed.

3. Of these 32, some have apparently already left for third countries or have married, which disqualifies them. There are now only 16 cases left. 4 of these had already received permission to settle in the FRG. The German authorities were still waiting for information and/or documentation from the other 12 so that their applications could be processed.

4. I leave it to you to take this further but would be happy to go back to the Auswärtiges Amt should you consider it necessary.
