RESPONSES BY RESETTLEMENT COUNTRIES

It is now nearly six weeks since the White Paper in response to SCORRI was published (26 September). During that period we have

been pressing other resettlement countries as widely as possible to

respond to our initiative by taking additional numbers of refugees

from Hong Kong. In addition to approaches by our overseas posts to

their host governments, we have sought to raise the matter a t

bilateral and multilateral meetings wherever possible.

Government official who attended the meeting as a member

delegation, lobbied other countries very actively and put Hong

Kong's case across most effectively. The Hong Kong Government have

also approached locally the consular representatives of the

Of the three main resettlement countries (USA, Canada and

Australia), only Australia has so far come up with a concrete offer

resettlement places: it has pledged at least 200 (and possibly up

to 400) extra places for Hong Kong between now and June 1986. The

US and Canada have yet to announce their decisions. It seems likely

that the Americans will eventually announce some kind of increase in their offtake from Hong Kong, though this may be delayed longer than
