5. In view of all this Cappello concluded that the Italian government could not at present commit itself to accepting any further batches of refugees in response to our request. He did not rule out the possibility of their doing so in the future however; and I agreed to keep him informed of the situation and to pass on any further information that I received about the situation in Hong Kong and the dimensions of the problem.
