VISIT BY THE NEW ZEALAND DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER
1. As you know, because of the very full discussion the Secretary of State had with Mr Palmer this morning (at which Lady Young was also present) there was no time for her planned bilateral with him. She was, however, able to cover the major points of outstanding business with Mr Palmer over lunch.
Vietnamese Refugees in Hong Kong

Lady Young said that she hoped that New Zealand might find it possible to accept more refugees from Hong Kong. Mr Palmer undertook to follow this up. He pointed out that New Zealand had already taken in quite a number of Vietnamese refugees but undertook to consider/whether it would be possible to take some more. Lady Young would be grateful if this could be followed up by our High Commission in Wellington.

Lady Young said that she very much hoped that we could count on New Zealand's support at the UNGA again this year. Mr Palmer repeated the line he had taken with the Secretary of State that although he could not commit himself he thought that we would be alright. This is very similar to what the New Zealanders were saying this time last year and Lady Young thinks that on past form we shall probably succeed in holding them to a vote against the Argentine resolution.
Ships Visits

Mr Palmer emphasised how grateful he was for the restrained line we had so far taken on the ships visits question. Acrimonious public debate would serve no-one's interest; and he had made a point of turning down requests for radio and television interviews on the subject during his stay in London. It was clear that he was very bitter
