Why issue passports in 1987?

to

Enables practice of issuing passports with 10 year validity

to continue uninterrupted. Allows time for countries

accept that change is simply one of name and has not

created immigration problems.

Those eligible will be able to apply for BN(0)

passports any time after 1 July 1987 but before a yet to be

determined cut-off date in 1997. When a BN (O) passport i s

issued, any BDTC passport held will be cancelled.

What will be the position after 30 June 1997 of Hong Kong

BDTCs who have not applied for BN(O) status?

I f they would otherwise be stateless, they will become

British Overseas Citizens.

Why is British Government only accepting 500 refugees from

Hong Kong?

UK cannot solve problem on its own. But depending on

response by other countries to Our initiative, we would

consider accepting further limited numbers from Hong Kong

in addition to the family reunion cases.
