FORMAT OF PASSPORTS TO BE ISSUED TO BRITISH NATIONALS WHO ARE NOT UNITED KINGDOM NATIONALS FOR EUROPEAN COMMUNITY PURPOSES

PROBLEM

1. What format of passport should be issued to British nationals

who are not United Kingdom nationals for European Community (EC)

purposes when we introduce the common format passport (CFP)?

RECOMMENDATION

2. I recommend that we agree with the Home Office that British

nationals who do not enjoy Community rights should be issued a

passport identical in format to that which is to be issued to persons.

who are UK nationals for EC purposes, except that the words

'European Community' will be omitted from the front cover and the

languages of the other member states (except French) will be

excluded from the inside pages. ECD(I) agree. I also recommend

that the Dependent Territories be encouraged to adopt a similar style

of passport.

BACKGROUND

3.
