VISA REQUIREMENTS

dol

Would you please refer to your minutes of 7 August to me and 15 August to Mrs Priest, HKD, about the recent Chinese communications concerning their passport/visa requirements for overseas Chinese visiting China.

2. I do not think any action by us is called for. So far as I know all British nationals visiting China require visas. If anyone whom the Chinese consider should be travelling on a Chinese passport applies for a visa, he will no doubt be told of this. However I believe that China does not recognise dual nationality and any persons who have been naturalised as British citizens will probably have ceased to be citizens of China.

3. Having now seen the enclosure to Pekings letter of 5 August attached to Mrs Priest's minute of 14 August, I suspect that in the Chinese MFA note of 29 July attached to your minute of 7 August the word 'only' at the end of paragraph 2, line 3, should really have read 'simply'.
