HK Economic Journal: Although the HK members on the drafting committee represent a wide cross section of the community, they have been selected more for cosmetic reasons than anything else.

Financial Daily: the leadership of the drafting committee shows that the real power is firmly in the hands of Chinese officials.

Ming Pao: There are

criticisms that most HK members are relatively conservative and represent the interests of capitalism. But this is only appropriate because the Basic Law should aim at preserving the existing social and economic systems and lifestyle after 1997 instead of seeking changes.

Ta Kung Pao: the formal approval of the member- ship list is a significant development for HK in preparation for a smooth transfer of power in 1997.

Wen Wei Po: The inclusion of 23 HK people in the final membership list demonstrates Peking's respect for HK people's wishes. There is no intention of denying the role of grassroots elements in society. The most important thing is how cooperation between capitalists and workers can be achieved for the good of both sides.

* New Evening Post: The drafting committee members are repre- sentative and will be able to reflect the views of various sectors in the community.

Publisher and drafting committee member Louis

Cha: Particular attention will be paid to provisions regarding

press freedom and the rule of law.

* FTU vice-chairman and drafting committee member Tam Yiu-chung: Attention will be focused on HK's political structure and labour benefits.

Umelco member and

drafting committee member Maria Tam: She will serve the drafting committee in her private capacity. But as a Umelco member, she will also pass on Umelco members' views to the committee and serve as a communication channel between the two.

*Ta Kung pao publisher and drafting committee member Fei Yimin: Members
