Sum of Meeting Point: The Basic Law drafting

committee should include Umelco members, political group representatives and religious leaders if the committee was to

represent a wide cross-section of the community.

* A Chinese source: The

present thinking of China on the Basic Law drafting is that HK representa tives will take up 30 per cent of the seats on the drafting committee and that the consultative

committee will start its

work about six months after the drafting committee is formed.

CU lecturer Andrew Wong: The Basic Law should be as simple as possible to allow for flexibility. It is not important whether the drafting committee comprises HK people if the draft Basic Law will be open for discussion by local residents.
