Mr Ji Pengfei delivered a speech at the first full session of

the Basic Law Drafting Committee for the Special Administrative Region of

Hong Kong held this afternoon at the Great Hall of the People. His speech

is as follows:

Members,

The first full session of the Basic Law Drafting Committee

for the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong of the People's

Republic of China is open now. First of all, may I take this

opportunity to thank you all.

We are appointed by the Standing Committee of the National

People's Congress as members of the Basic Law Drafting Committee

for the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong. The

appointment shows that they have placed confidence in us and

we are greatly honoured. I am very pleased to work with you all, to contribute towards the mission of accomplishing this

arduous historic task. Now, may I declare the formal commencement of work of the Basic Law Drafting Committee for the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong.

Members, the Chinese and British Governments had reached a

satisfactory agreement on the question of Hong Kong after two

years' negotiations. According to the Sino-British Joint
