1. The House has recently had several opportunities to debate Hong

Kong very fully in the context of the Hong Kong Bill. I am happy to

say that reactions in Hong Kong to the agreement continue

good: the Hong Kong dollar is strong and the economy buoyant.

made in due course following discussion with the Chinese Government.

Her Majesty's Government continue to make every effort, in

co-operation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

and with other countries, to find a durable solution to the problem

of the 11,500 Vietnamese refugees now in Hong Kong. The Home

Affairs Sub-Committee on Race Relations and Immigration have been

taking evidence on this issue, and await the publication of their

report with keen interest.
