1. Mr Syamsul Hilal and Mr Jacobus Anduwacu of Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia called without appointment to see me today. They asked for details of The Agreement on the Future of Hong Kong. I gave them the White Paper and some oral background briefing. The Bank had been considering two years ago to establish a representative office in Hong Kong but the idea had been shelved because of uncertainty at the time over Hong Kong's future. Now that the Agreement has been signed, the Bank is keen to explore afresh the possibility of setting up a representative office. They appeared encouraged by the wide acceptance of the Agreement.

2. Last year the Bank opened a branch in New York and, with some assistance from us, a representative office in London (a preliminary to establishing a full branch in London).

3. Mr Syamsul is likely to contact us again with questions about Hong Kong and about the procedure for establishing an office there.
