SIR Y K PÃO'S GRANDCHILDREN
6. Two years ago Sir Y K approached the Prime Minister and the
Foreign Secretary about British citizenship for his children. Sir Y
K Pao's daughter and son-in-law acquired British citizenship by administrative action (this is personal to the individuals concerned
and does not enable British citizen status to be transmitted to
their children). His 3 grandchildren however hold BDTC passports and have never been accorded the right of abode in the UK.
no obvious case for them to be granted British citizenship.

7. Last year Sir Y K conducted a lengthy corresondence with Mr Luce
on the question of British citizenship for his grandchildren. When he last saw Mr Luce on 15 November 1984 the latter suggested that Sir Y K's grandchildren should wait until they were 18 years old and
then apply to settle here. They could argue at that time that they had strong links with the UK and sufficient funds to be considered as individuals of "independent means". There is no automatic
guarantee that they would then acquire British citizenship.
Discretion would rest with the Home Secretary Sir Y K mentioned
the possibility of seeking further help, probably from the FCO,
about arranging an appointment with the Home Office to discuss the
problem. He has not in
in the event reverted to the issue with us, Sir
Percy Cradock or the Home Office, but it is possible that he may
raise the matter again with Mr Luce.
