Action Taken

Peter Blaker introduced the meeting reporting on his recent visit to Hong Kong. Referring to the recently signed agreement he was in no doubt that the Chinese will stick to the agreement and will behave in a practical way.

On the economic front despite the fact that exports are down he emphasised the importance of Hong Kong to the Chinese.

On the nationality area he said the speeches made in the Hong Kong Legislative Council last week were available from the Hong Kong offices. It had been useful that the Government had said "No one will be stateless".

Alf Dubbs commented

on

the level of Chinese

investment in

Hong Kong.

Lord Maclhose said it was his experience that

1) Fears had been dispelled since the agreement and the Civil Servants were now quite enthusiastic and there was no trouble in recruitment.

2) The success of Hong Kong was in the underlying Chinese support which had been demonstrated over the years.
