prior there to that person has an appropriate qualifying connection

with a British Dependent Territory other than Hong Kong.

(2) For the purpose of this Article, a person shall be taken to

have an appropriate qualifying connection with a Dependent Territory

i f

(a) he was born there before 1 January 1983; or

(b)

(c)

he was born there on or after 1 January 1983 and at the time of

his birth either of his parents was settled there; or

his parent or grandparent was born there; or

(d) he, his parent or grandparent is or was a person naturalised or

registered there.

(1) Any person who is a British Dependent Territories citizen

by virtue of his having a connection with Hong Kong and who does not

have an appropriate qualifying connection (as defined in Article 3)

with a British Dependent Territory other than Hong Kong, shall be

entitled, on an application made before the specified date, to be

registered as

as a British National (Overseas).

(2) Any person who, immediately before 1 July 1997, is a British National (Overseas) but not a British Dependent Territories

citizen shall on that date cease to be a British National

(Overseas).

5.

On and after 1 July 1997, the British Nationality Act 1981 shall

have effect as if in Schedule 6 to that Act (a)(British Dependent

Territories) the words "Hong Kong" were omitted and accordingly no

person shall acquire British Dependent Territories citizenship on or

after 1 July 1997 by virtue of his having a connection with Hong

Kong.

6. (1) Where a person ceases on 1 July 1997 by virtue of Article 3

to be a British Dependent Territories citizen or by virtue of

Article 4

(2) to be a British National (Overseas) and would, but for this paragraph, thereby be rendered stateless, he shall become on
