INDIANS
A number of noble Lords have referred to the position of
BDT、s of ethnic Indian origin in Hong Kong.
Many Indians in Hong Kong are BDTCs. As such, they will be
eligible to acquire BN (O) status. Those who have made
their home in Hong Kong will be able to enjoy right of
abode in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under
the provisions of Section XIV of Annex I of the Joint
Declaration. In negotiating that agreement, our aim has been to make sure that Hong Kong will continue to be a
satisfactory place for all its present inhabitants to
continue to live and prosper in after 1997. We believe that the agreement meets this objective, and that therefore grounds do not exist for granting right of abode in the United Kingdom to this group.
