concerned we will be terminating sovereignty over the ceded areas, and terminating jurisdiction over both the ceded
areas and the New Territories, the latter being held on an international lease. the chinese view of the legal position
is of course different.
BASIC LAW
As I said in
in our last debate the drafting of the Basic Law
is clearly a matter for the Chinese Government. Chinese
leaders assured my rt hon Friend the Prime Minister during
her visit to Peking that the people of Hong Kong would be
consulted on a wide basis.
The machinery for this
consultation has not yet been announced by the Chinese
Government.
