In recent years, the Government has when, divesting the United Kingdom of sovereignty over a dependent territory done so upon the authority of an Act of Parliament. Hong Kong's case is of course somewhat different from that of

other dependent territories, but the Government still

needs the authority of an Act of Parliament before it

ratifies the agreement and thus creates obligation to terminate sovereignty.
