6. Assurances have been given by HMG to people in Hong Kong that,

because of their service to the Crown, if they wish to apply they

will be permitted to settle in the UK and remain here. These

assurances extend to the spouse and dependent children under 18 of

those concerned. It is intended that the arrival of these people

will be phased over a number of years.

We are making every effort in cooperation with the United

Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other countries, to seek

permanent solutions for the refugees who are in Hong Kong and other

places of first asylum.

NATIONALITY

International recognition of SAR and new-style passports?

Both SAR and new-style British passports will contain clear evidence statement of holder's right of abode in Hong Kong SAR. SAR

Government will be assisted or authorised by Central People's

Government to conclude visa abolition agreements. HMG will do all

they can to secure for holders of new-style British passports the

same access to other countries as that enjoyed

that enjoyed at present by holders

of BDTC passports. Every reason to be confident of international

acceptance of these passports.

Procedure for acquiring "new" form of British Nationality?

9. Details will be announced later. Arrangements will be made for

BDTC passports to be replaced before 1 July 1997 by passports

pertaining to new status.

All BDTCs by virtue of connection with Hong Kong will be

eligible to retain British Nationality after 1997. Most Hong Kong

residents become subject to immigration control under Commonwealth Immigration Act 1962. Position unchanged by British Nationality Act
